Under the existing system for allocating homes, tenants have little choice about where they live, and transferring to a different home if your circumstances change can take a very long time. Medway HomeChoice does not mean there will be more housing available, but the new system has the potential to bring many benefits to people trying to get a home or to transfer in the Medway area. For example:
- You choose a home, the council or housing association doesn't choose it for you
- You don't wait to be asked, you have an active role in finding something suitable for your needs in an area you would like to live in. So, if you keep trying, you may well be able to get a home or change your home more quickly
- You should find it easier to move if you need to
- Homechoice should be a much simpler and clearer system for people to understand than the existing points-based system
- Other options may be suggested to you from time to time. Like opportunities to buy a home on a shared ownership basis with a housing association, or renting private property where the wait for council housing may be too long
- You may receive advice and information about schemes and money available to help you find suitable private rented properties.
