Medway HomeChoice was designed to make social housing more accessible. In the past the council decided where and when you would be offered a home, now you have a choice in deciding where you would like to live. Once registered with Medway HomeChoice you will be able to bid for Medway Council and Housing Association properties we advertise in the Medway area.

Why the change to Medway Home Choice?

Under the existing system for allocating homes, tenants have little choice about where they live, and transferring to a different home if your circumstances change can take a very long time. Many people wait on the housing register for many years with little chance of ever being offered a home by the council or a housing association.

Medway HomeChoice does not mean there will be more housing available, but the new system has the potential to bring many benefits to people trying to get a home or to transfer in the Medway area. For example:
- You choose a home, the council or housing association doesn't choose it for you
- You don't wait to be asked, you have an active role in finding something suitable for your needs in an area you would like to live in. So, if you keep trying, you may well be able to get a home or change your home more quickly
- You should find it easier to move if you need to
- Homechoice should be a much simpler and clearer system for people to understand than the existing points-based system
- Other options may be suggested to you from time to time. Like opportunities to buy a home on a shared ownership basis with a housing association, or renting private property where the wait for council housing may be too long
- You may receive advice and information about schemes and money available to help you find suitable private rented properties.

Landlords

For the local landlords involved in Medway HomeChoice, there should also be benefits:
- Properties should stay empty for less time
- If people have more choice about where they live, there should be fewer complaints about the system
- If people choose a home they are less likely to want a transfer later
- It should be a more efficient system for letting homes
- More choice should mean people are happier with their housing, making estates easier to manage
